Restore & get back Edge Favorites after Resetting Windows 11/10
Recently after noticing that my Windows computer was performing unusually slow, I decided to Reset my PC and Outset fresh. Since resetting is similar to reinstalling Windows without any applications only maintaining User Data at the same fourth dimension, all my data and settings were prophylactic except my Edge Favorites. Later on resetting my PC, I opened up the Edge browser, and the Favorites were gone!
While I was looking around for a solution, I got to know that Edge has built-in favorites export/import characteristic, which tin backup your bookmarks and keeps them safe. Only in my case, that was not possible because I had already lost them. So, in case your Edge does not automatically restore the bookmarks, hither is how I got back my Border Favorites from the Windows.old binder.
When nosotros reinstall or reset Windows, all our older files are moved to a Windows.former binder in the installation drive. This binder contains all the files and settings from the previous installation, and this folder is deleted automatically after some time.
Read: Where are Favorites stored in Edge browser.
Excerpt Edge Chromium Favorites from Windows.old
Open up the Windows installation directory (usually C:/) and and so open the Windows.sometime binder.
Now open 'Users' binder and then open the binder respective to your earlier username.
\%username%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Information\Default
Here, yous will find a file called "Bookmarks".
That'due south the 1! Copy it to where y'all want to announced.
Extract Edge Legacy Favorites from Windows.erstwhile
Open up the Windows installation directory (ordinarily C:/) and then open the Windows.erstwhile binder.
At present open 'Users' binder and so open the folder corresponding to your earlier username.
From the View menu above, enable 'Hidden Items' and open a hidden folder chosen 'AppData'.
Navigate to 'Local' and so open 'Packages'.
Now detect and open the folder starting with 'Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge'.
Open the folder 'AC', then 'MicrosoftEdge', so 'User' and so 'Default'.
The unabridged address to the binder will now await like this:
C:\Windows.old\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\AC\MicrosoftEdge\User\Default
Copy the contents of this binder and save information technology somewhere else to take a backup.
Restore & go back Edge Legacy Favorites
Now that we've extracted these Favorites, it is time to put them into the right place then that Border tin load them upwardly.
Become to the same folder but this time, not in 'Windows.former' binder but in the installation drive. The address may wait something like this.
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\AC\MicrosoftEdge\User\Default
Paste the files you've copied in previous steps, and you are good to become. Shut Edge if information technology was already opened and open it up once more.
You will be surprised to see all your favorites back in identify equally you lot left them.
You may face a slight issue every bit when yous will close Edge and reopen it again; all your bookmarks will be gone again. To overcome this get to 'Favorites', then click on 'Settings'. And so select 'Import from another browser' and and so click 'Export' push button and save the HTML file. Shut Edge and open information technology again, if you observe that your bookmarks are gone and so import the same HTML file, and the bookmarks will at present never exit this place.
This was how I got back my Edge favorites after resetting Windows 10. If you face whatever bug in the entire process, feel free to annotate downwardly beneath.
I strongly believe that bookmarks should be treated differently on Edge. Favorites should be automatically backed upwards to cloud and linked to Microsoft Account, similar to what Google does with Chrome.
Recently nosotros covered a pocket-size utility called StorURL, a gratuitous cross-browser bookmarks manager. Yous can use it to import bookmarks from all browsers including Google Chrome and Firefox. The tool can be used to take bookmark backups and manage them efficiently.
PS: Says TonyC in comments beneath: I plant an automatic fill-in of Edge data in here:
C:\Users\<user>\MicrosoftEdgeBackups\backups\MicrosoftEdgeBackupyyyymmdd
After I set up upwards a new laptop (Favorites then disappeared). Merely restore that file from the Import Favourites feature and y'all are adept to go.
